Honors, awards for M-A students and teachers

by Linda Hubbard Gulker on November 22, 2010

It seems the season for honors and awards for a number of M-A students and teachers, reports the school’s PTA newsletter.

M-A senior Nikhil Viswanathan earned the highest composite score of 36 on the ACT college admissions and placement exam, an achievement earned by less than one-tenth of one percent of 1.6 million test-takers across the U.S.

M-A’ Science Teacher Lance Powell received an “Educator of the Year” award from the California League of High Schools. Lance, who was featured on InMenlo, teaches Environmental Chemistry and Academy Biology.

Fifty of M-A’s Academy students who earned GPAs of 3.0 or higher in the school’s incentive program were treated to a recent kayaking trip at Elkhorn Slough in Moss Landing. When the incentive program started six years ago, only three students earned a 3.0 or higher GPA.  The increased achievement has been led by Academy teachers Inez Paepcke, Lance Powell, Chris Rubin, Stacey Woodcock, and Academy Coordinator Paul Snow.
