Snowy egret at Bedwell Bayfront Park

Menlo Park residents are invited to pick up free compost at Bedwell Bayfront Park on Saturday, July 2, during regular park hours while supply lasts. Compost is available the first Saturday of every month (except December).

Residents should bring proof of residency, shovels, containers, and be prepared to help themselves to the large pile of compost just inside the entrance to the Park, located near the intersection of Bayfront Expressway and Marsh Road. The material comes from residential recycling of organic material through the curbside collection program.

For garden improvement tips and where to buy mulch and compost locally, visit  San Mateo County RecycleWorks Program.

Thumbnail image for 2010-2011 rainfall year — It’s a wrap!

The Menlo Park area received 20.8 inches of rain in the rainfall year ending today, according to my backyard gauges. That compares to 21.39″ for the 2009-2010 year. The SFO total was 22.98″ and San Jose, 15.61″ — we routinely fall between the two. The big rainfall months were: November 2.75″, December 4.55″, February 4.75″, […]

Spotted: Hot Rods at Fremont Park

Thumbnail image for Spotted: Hot Rods at Fremont Park

The Hot Rods in question tonight (6/29) were the musical not automative kind. The second of the season summer concert at Fremont Park featured a five-piece band playing early rock-n-roll hits. You knew the tunes if you listened to Top 40 radio in the late 50s and early 60s. The result: Lots of little kids […]

Thumbnail image for From Fairwinds to Arbor House: The saga of one of Menlo’s most historic homes

As you transit the narrow winding section of Arbor Drive that runs beside St. Raymond Church and School, you may notice a large, rather elegant house set back from the road surrounded by a couple acres of lawn. This 16-room three-story house, built 100 years ago (1911) on an 11-acre plot, was first occupied by […]

Today’s rain is a nice surprise! I went out at 4:15 pm and found .4″ in my gauge. It continues to drizzle, so I may have more in the morning. My year-to-date total is now 20.7″ comparing to 21.39″ last year. It had long stopped raining by this date in June 2010. Will this be […]

Sally and Michael Lussier: Celebrating 45 years of marriage

Occasionally we get a bit personal here on InMenlo, especially as it pertains to growing up on Hillview Drive, as this contributor did. It was a Wonder Years type existence, walking the short distance to Hillview School (then a K-8) and playing outside on the street with the neighbor kids until it got dark during […]

Habibi’s Salon: Celebrating its first anniversary as a full-service hair salon for the whole family

Thumbnail image for Habibi’s Salon: Celebrating its first anniversary as a full-service hair salon for the whole family

On a recent weekday morning, Habibi’s Salon in the Willows was a hive of activity. In one chair sat a woman getting a sleek new cut while her preschooler watched cartoons on the big-screen TV and charmed other customers. Another client settled in for a Keratin straightening treatment, while another was having her hair styled […]
