Spotted: M-A grad Bob Melvin managing the As to a victory at Yankee Stadium

Bob Melvin (number 6) at Yankee Stadium on August 23, 2011

Reporting from the field, we remarked to another Bay Area native at Yankee Stadium this evening that it was somewhat ironic to travel 3,000 miles to see home town sports hero Bob Melvin (number 6 in photo) make good, at least for one night of baseball. The third-in-their-division As crept into Yankee Stadium tonight and beat the first place (in their division) Yanks 6-5 behind strong pitching by starter Brandon McCarthy and two soaring home runs by Brandon Allen. (Call it a big night for the Brandons.) Seated on the third base side behind the visitor’s dugout, we watched the pride of Menlo-Atherton High School, Bob Melvin, hang on the rail and make a visit to the mound to take McCarthy out in the bottom of the 8th. That Melvin now lives in NYC is further irony.
