Students, teachers, parents, and school supporters of all kinds — including the Encinal Eagle — were a visible presence yesterday on campuses across Menlo Park. It was a sea of orange, from posters and t-shirts to wristbands and car decals.

The occasion marked the conclusion of an ambitious month-long fundraising campaign that is the first of its kind, with the PTOs from Encinal, Hillview, Laurel, and Oak Knoll partnering with the District’s Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation (MPAEF). By working together to raise much-needed funds, they hope to underscore how vital each organization is to the city’s schools. And they urge parents and community members to support both — the PTOs for providing school-focused programs like assemblies, field trips, and classroom supplies, and the MPAEF for District-wide resources, including 21 teachers and specialists like librarians and art, music, and science teachers.

The joint effort is seen as crucial this year because the state of California has cut $1.4 million from the District’s budget. The MPAEF aims to make up that loss, in addition to raising money for its annual grant (which was $2.6 million last year), for a total of $4 million.
