Jessica Rancourt and Hillary Avis first met when they were both planning do-it-yourself weddings. Today, Jessica is the mother of three and Hillary has one child with another on the way. With summer here, they’re teaming up together to present Camp Menlo Mom that offers projects and field trips for kids three to eight and their parents.

“The inspiration was doing volunteer work for the Laurel School art and science fair,” said Jessica. “I wanted to do that kind of thing all summer but I knew I couldn’t do it alone. I also wanted to expand my son’s group of friends. So I emailed all my friends about the idea of doing a non-drop off, day camp, and Hillary was the first to respond.”

Added Hillary: “Camp Menlo Mom is fun, cheap and local. Think of it as family powered. We connect with other parents while the kids connect with each other.”

So far, 40 families have signed up. “It’s come when you can, help when you can,” explained Hillary. The group has a Facebook page; alternatively they can be reached via email: campmenlomom@gmail.com

The first Camp Menlo Mom activity is planned for June 8 – a bubble party and pot luck at Holbrook Palmer Park in Atherton from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. “We’re going to have several different stations of bubble activities, including a kiddie pool with a hula hoop for big bubbles.”

Jessica and Hillary are seeking donations of materials like popsicle sticks. They’re also on the outlook for people who have a particular skill that would be fun or interesting to share with kids. “Think of it as what you can share from your front porch!” said Jessica.
