Menlo Park Police Department patrols on bikes

by Contributed Content on May 8, 2013

The Menlo Park Police Department continues to use more officers to patrol the streets on two wheels instead of four as part of our ongoing efforts to engage, protect and serve the Menlo Park community.

MPPD is using bicycle officers as an effective policing tool to perform visible patrol duties, community relations and crime prevention. You will see our officers in all areas of the City of Menlo Park. They are engaging with residents, businesses and visitors, conducting traffic and pedestrian enforcement, and burglary suppression.

I hope they patrol where it is needed the most.

This is great! An efficient and cost effective way to conduct patrols that puts police officers in touch with people in the neighborhoods they patrol. Best use of taxpayer’s money I’ve seen in decades, plus it keeps the officers fit and healthy as well.

However, knobbly mountain bike tires are not suitable for this kind of duty. They should switch to something more road friendly like a Continental Town and Country MTB Tire. Makes for a smoother and faster ride on pavement but can still be used on dirt or gravel trails.

Great news. In many neighborhoodss of MP, it makes good sense to patrol on bikes. It also connects the officers better to the residents who might stroll around, shop, or enjoy their gardens.
