InMenlo weather watcher Bill Russ has called Menlo Park home since 1952. He started measuring rainfall, using dual gauges in his backyard 14 years ago, because, he says, “It’s something old guys do.” When not occupied with the weather, Bill, with spouse Sally, applies his vigor to walks around Menlo and active participation at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church.

My brand new rain gauge recorded .6″ of rain in the first storm of the 2013-14 rain year. That’s not bad for September 21 and the eve of the Autumn Equinox. An early start and hopefully a signal of an abundant year!

Today ends the 2012-13 rainfall year, which began on July 1, 2012. The total number of inches of rain recorded in my backyard is 16.5″. That compares to 11.95″ in the 2011-2012 year and 20.8″ in the 2010-11 year. What was surprising about the 16.5″ was that 14.65″ fell prior to January 1st and only 1.85″ […]

Overnight showers adds 1/4 inch to Menlo’s annual rainfall

Assuming no more rain today (although some is in the forecast), both my gauges showed .25″ from the rain that fell mostly overnight. This brings my season-to-date total to 15.7″. Last year at this time I was showing 5.4″. After a slow winter, late March added about 6″. My hope for this season is to […]

Spritz of rainfall brings higher temps to Menlo Park

The on again/off again spritz of rain has netted another .1″ inch, bringing my season-to-date to 15.05″. Last January we got 1.7″ on 1/21, followed by .1″ the next day and another .7″ on the 23rd. The season-to-date total was then 4.6″, and no more rain until February 7. What is noteworthy about the relatively dry […]
