For the 5th year in a row, the team from St. Raymond School was the overall winner in the Archdiocese of San Francisco’s Academic Decathlon competition. Students in grades 6-8 from thirteen schools competed in the Academic Decathlon held the first weekend in March at St. Pius School in Redwood City.

The competition includes two team events — a logic quiz with 20 rigorous thinking problems and a super quiz with 50 multiple choice questions covering five broad academic themes.  St. Raymond School placed first in the super quiz and third in the logic quiz.

There are also eight individual events testing knowledge of Roman Catholic doctrine, English, literature, science, mathematics, current events, social studies and fine arts.  St. Raymond students placed in six of these eight events. Annika Porteous placed first in Religion, Sarah Mascarenhas placed first in English, Alyssa Turenne placed first in Science, McKenna Kirscht placed first in Fine Arts, Yaiza Fernandez placed second in Current Events and Finnan MacRunnels placed third in Social Studies.

Led by St. Raymond School teacher, Patrick Sullivan, the team members included Patrick Boyd, Anna Fawcett, Yaiza Fernandez, Jack Glanville, Nelson Harris,  McKenna Kirscht, Finnan MacRunnels, Sarah Mascarenhas, Kara Merkert, Mary Murphy Stroth, Annika Porteous, Anna Thieman, Alyssa Turenne and Emily Williams (Team Captain).  St. Raymond School will now move on to the State Academic Decathlon competition in San Diego on April 28th.
