It’s date season at Menlo Park farmers market

One of the boutique vendors at the Menlo Park farmers market is Flying Disc Ranch, which offers a wide variety of seasonal dates. Owner Robert Lower founded the date farm – located in in Thermal, CA – in 1979 and planted from scratch, transforming the desert landscape. He’s always sold direct to the public, selling at farmers markets throughout California with the help of local-based sales people. Available for purchase at this morning’s market in Menlo were Zahidi (Libya), Derrie (Iraq), Kwahdrawi (Iraq) , Medjool (Morocco) Barhi (Iraq) and two varieties unique to the ranch – Amber and Tootsie.

There was a great article in the Sunday New York Times Magazine last weekend about Flying Disc Ranch: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/14/magazine/14food-t-000.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=flying%20disc&st=cse
