“Carts to Cars: A Celebration of Horsepower—Then and Now” is theme of fundraiser to be held at Folger Stable

by Contributed Content on September 1, 2014

A unique fundraising event is being planned by The Friends of Huddart and Wunderlich Parks at the historic Folger Stable in Woodside on Sunday, September 28, 2014. Focused on the history of horsepower and how it has been used locally, the event will benefit a range of improvement projects in both Huddart and Wunderlich parks as well as the Friends’ educational programs.

In various exhibits, the event will celebrate horses and the power they inspired in the vehicles that replaced them. Highlights include real horses — a pony and two draft horses — that will demonstrate what “one horse power” means by pulling carts with weights that mimic how horsepower was determined in the 19th century.

Collectible vehicles — carriages of the early 1890s, a beautiful Enzo Ferrari, an electric Tesla — will be also showcased. Other classic vehicles from the 1900s through the 1960s will be on display.

In addition to the exhibitions, the event will include a silent auction of intriguing horsepower-related items donated by local generous individuals and businesses that share the Friends’ concerns for the local parks. Appetizers, beverages and a buffet dinner will add to the celebration.

Tickets are $150 each; sponsorships are available. More information is available online or call 650-851-2660.

The Friends of Huddart and Wunderlich Parks organization was founded in 1992 and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2002. It is dedicated to preserving the local environment and historic legacies of the two Woodside parks. While the early programs of the Friends supported various aspects of park management, its activities have expanded over the years to include children’s educational hikes and exhibits.
