Oh, no! Foster’s Freeze in Menlo Park is closing
What has been feared for a decade appears to be imminent. After over 50 years in business, Foster’s Freeze on Oak Grove Avenue in Menlo Park will close on September 30.
Along with Johnny’s Smoke Shop next door, Foster’s was the place to hang out for high school kids in the 60s. The parking lot was often awash in a sea of cool cars.
When we talked to owner Sung Lee in 2011, he noted the drop off in business when M-A closed its campus for lunch. The iconic seller of soft serve ice cream has long been threatened by redevelopment along that stretch of Oak Grove between El Camino and the train tracks.

Another sad day for MP!!! So many fond memories from Fosters in MP and RWC on Woodside road. Of course Jiffy Burgers also put a cramp onto sales at Fosters. After a little league game, win or lose, we would get a vanilla cone dipped in your favorite flavor…..Too bad someone could not keep it going!

In 1965, I worked for awhile on Friday and Saturday nights. The standing agreement was that I’d swap 6 large Cokes for a small cup of straight bourbon. The smell of the ice-milk mix was unbearable after a while and being looped helped.
