Morning rain report as El Niño finally arrives

by Linda Hubbard Gulker on January 5, 2016

PM update: “Another .2″ since my morning report. This brings my back yard total to 7.75″. It is building up nicely. I hear more tomorrow morning. Hold tight!” emails Bill Russ.

Meteorologists have said that our rain in December was not related to El Niño, but that the series of storms we’re experiencing this week heralds its official arrival.

InMenlo weather watcher Bill Russ reported .55 inches of rain earlier this morning, pushing the season-t0-date to 7.35 inches. Showers continued throughout the morning.

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, the current El Niño ties the strongest previous El Niño on record (1997-98). It is expected to remain strong through the winter months, before yielding to more neutral conditions by late spring or early summer.
