Stanford Blood Center has urgent need for all blood types

by Linda Hubbard on October 21, 2019

The flu season is here, and local residents are being asked to donate all blood types at Stanford Blood Center (SBC) to ensure a sustainable supply to meet the needs of patients at local hospitals.

“The flu season has arrived early, and it’s put us in a tough position for collecting the blood products needed to help save lives,” says SBC spokesperson Ross Coyle. “We’re already feeling the impact with a dip in appointments and, considering that only about five percent of the Bay Area currently donate blood, maintaining a strong inventory can be particularly challenging during this time. So, we’re reaching out to the public to please consider coming in to one of our centers or visiting a mobile blood drive.”

The Stanford Blood Center in Menlo Park is located 445 Burgess Drive. Call (888) 723-7831 to make a same day appointment. Appointments can also be scheduled online.

Thanks for posting this. I suggest calling to make appointment and if you have lived in UK for more than >6 months prior to 1996 (to 1980 approx.) note you are still ineligible to donate blood in US.

The Blood Service currently can’t take blood donations from people who lived in the UK for six months or more from 1980–1996. This is related to the fatal variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD, the human form of the bovine condition sometimes known as ‘mad cow disease’):

UK and other EU nationals who lived in Europe from 1980 to end 1996 are still ineligible to donate. (Could apply to US military resident there also als0). See more details here

If ever this restriction is ever lifted, I’d be happy to donate some pure Irish blood !

This is sad to read this, for over 20 years annually we had a Stanford Blood Drive Bus at our location in East Palo Alto. During that time we had a very successful donations with more units donated at ours than most other locations as they always mentioned. They abruptly ended our event and said they would not partake anymore and you didn’t give us any kind of reason. Since then the Pacific blood centers have stepped it up and have provided two buses every year. Stanford is always welcome as we always try to give back locally, if anybody reaches and is interested in contacting me please feel free at 415-756-2291.
Best regards,
Michael
