The Menlo-Atherton High School girls junior varsity volleyball team finished their 2023 season on Tuesday, October 26, with an unprecedented, undefeated record of 26-0, including 14-0 in Peninsula Athletic League competition. Throughout the season, the team lost only 4 of the 56 sets they played.

“We had a number of returning players which was instrumental in developing a fast uptempo offense not typically seen at the junior varsity level,” said Coach Darryl Chan, who was in his first year as coach of the junior varsity girls. “We also displayed mental toughness to overcome some significant deficits and be able to pull out wins. Each week, I asked more of the team in terms of adding levels of complexity on offense and defense. Great talent, awesome team chemistry and supportive families! What a great season!”

“This has been one of my favorite seasons because of how supportive the team was for each other,” said junior Meghan Lam, the team’s co-captain. “Whenever someone made an amazing play, everyone got so hyped up and it was a great environment. During practice we worked hard on our serving and free ball passing, and when we applied these skills on the court, we were able to dominate in league.”

“The team had an historic season going 26-0 and not dropping a set in the month of October, said M-A Co-Athletic Director, Steve Kryger. “We are proud of what Coach Chan and the girls accomplished on the court while maintaining a team GPA of 3.465. We look forward to the girls continuing to grow and improve and challenge themselves to be prepared to compete at the next level in the future.”

The M-A girls also took time from their schedule in mid-October to host a volleyball clinic for girls from Hillview Middle School. The team taught the middle-schoolers fundamental skills for setting, passing and serving, and helped them get a sense of what it’s like to be on a high school volleyball team.
