Painting demonstration by artist Decker Walker at Portola Art Gallery on Sept. 17

by Frances Freyberg on September 12, 2011

A series of free monthly painting demonstrations is being presented by Portola Art Gallery in September, October and November.

The first demonstration, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17 from 10:00 am to noon, will feature Decker Walker, who will be painting portraits in oil. Decker is an award-winning artist who also exhibits at the Society of Western Artists, the Pacific Art League, and the American Impressionist Society.

Working from a  live model, he will first draw a rough outline, then block in the basic colors. He will then develop the painting, working from larger to smaller features to produce a lively and accurate likeness of the sitter. During the demonstration, he will think aloud as he paints and answer questions during model breaks.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a chair and a snack or enjoy lunch at Cafe Primavera on the premises after the demonstration. The event will be held outdoors, weather permitting, otherwise in the Gallery.

Future painting demonstrations include:

  • Plein Air Landscape by Mark Monsarrat; October 29, 2011, 10:00 am – noon
  • Portrait by Marsha Heimbecker; November 17, 2011, 10:00 am – noon

The Portola Art Gallery is located at the Allied Arts Guild on Arbor Rd. in Menlo Park.
