M-A teacher Marei Kane named San Mateo County Teacher of the Year

Menlo-Atherton High School English and English Language Development (ELD) teacher Marei Kane has been selected as the 2013 San Mateo Country Teacher of the Year for middle/high school.

“Ms. Kane is remarkable for her many skills and talents, but in particular, for how she meets the needs of all learners, scaffolding rigorous and engaging lessons for students of all abilities,” said SMC Superintendent of Schools Anne Campbell. “Her approach with differentiated instruction provides the necessary support for all her students to realize success.”

As a world traveler and speaker of five languages, Ms. Kane brings a global perspective and a passion for learning to her classroom. She loves teaching writing and guides students to master the fundamentals while developing their own unique voice. Matthew Zito, principal of M-A calls Marei “a true innovator and educational leader.”

Ms. Kane graduated Cum Laude from San Francisco State University in 1986, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. She has two Single Subject Credentials, one in English and one in German. She taught at San Francisco Unified and Jefferson Elementary prior to coming to M-A in 1998,
