More traffic delays as final phase of PG&E work on Sand Hill Road pipeline replacement begins

PG&E, which began a 24” gas pipeline replacement project on Sand Hill Road between Sand Hill Circle and Branner Drive last summer, is now entering the final phase – the restoration of the roadway on Sand Hill Road.

PG&E will be paving all areas of Sand Hill Road that have been disturbed by the gas pipeline construction during the week of June 24. Construction will begin the evening of Monday June 24 as crews grind off 2 inches of the existing pavement to prepare for the daytime paving using rubberized asphalt. Grinding operations will continue for the next three to four evenings, with placement of the new pavement taking place during the subsequent daytime hours. By scheduling the grinding work during the evenings, the project schedule and corresponding impacts to daytime traffic is shortened considerably.

According to Chip Taylor, Public Works Director, “we had hoped to do the paving work in the evenings as well, however the rubberized asphalt is very temperature sensitive and must be placed during the daytime hours to maintain minimum temperatures and ensure a quality product.” Mr. Taylor also noted the paving operations will be scheduled to minimize impact to the morning and evening commute hours, however significant impacts and delays are expected. “With a project of this magnitude on Sand Hill Road, we anticipate extreme delays and ask motorists and bicyclists to plan accordingly.”

All paving operations are anticipated to be complete by Saturday June 29, with traffic striping restoration work scheduled for the following week. All work should be complete in time for the  July 4th holiday.
