Facebook and local leaders in the community will visit Cesar Chavez Academy on in East Palo Alto on Thursday, August 22 to launch the Facebook Back-to-School Laptop Giveaway Program.  As an extension of their ongoing work with local communities and science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) related activities, Facebook will be donating 100 laptops to the entire 8th grade class at Cesar Chavez Academy.

“We want to get young people interested and help them excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematical skills,” said Tim Campos Facebook’s Chief Information Officer. “Our goal with the laptop giveaway program is to provide students with the equipment they’ll need to learn more about technology and prepare them for high school, college and beyond.”

In addition to the Cesar Chavez Academy 8th grade class, Facebook will also provide laptops to the 8th grade classes at Belle Haven (K-8th) and Willow Oaks (K-8th) schools in Menlo Park to support their growth in STEM.

“In order to generate systemic improvement in our community, it is important that our schools partner with the Silicon Valley companies right in our back yard to help prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century economy,” said Ravenswood City Schools Superintendent Dr. Gloria Hernandez. “We are so thankful for Facebook’s partnership in helping to bridge the digital divide our students face and hope it is the first of many collaborative efforts with our local industry leaders.”
