Encinal School adds science fair to family fun night

Last afternoon Friday (4/25) the rain stopped, the sun came out, and Encinal Elementary School’s Family Fun Night was underway. The PTO-sponsored SPINGO event includes science, pizza, and bingo.

Singers and musicans from Menlo-AthertonHigh School, including some Encinal alumni, serenaded attendees, and Lawrence Hall of Science provided a hands-on interactive science session “Wizard’s Lab”. Some of Encinal’s fifth graders staffed the bingo tables.

This year’s SPINGO chair, Encinal mom Melissa Berhow, along with 7th grade Hillview student Navya Anne, created the school’s first annual Science Fair. 140 students were involved in 80 projects, including “How much salt does it take to float an egg?” and “Does the color of the light effect mold growth?”

Next year, organizers hope to involve even more of the student body in the science fair, expand partnerships with other MPCSD schools, and draw on the brain-power of the academic and business community to help Encinal students reach even farther into the world of science.
