Daisy Girl Scout Troop gathers on Veterans Day to help raise money for holiday care packages

Laurel School mom (and Jazzercise teacher) Meredith Ozbil gave us a heads up that her daughter’s Daisy Girl Scout Troop — all 1st graders — would be gathering at Cafe Zoë this morning to help raise money for the annual Veterans Holiday Drive sponsored by the Cafe and fellow Menalto Corners businesses, Habibi’s Salon and Spa in the Park.

Emailed Meredith: “The girls will be helping by decorating signs and collection boxes for the drive. By doing this, the girls will earn their ‘Making the World a Better Place’ petal and learn about veterans and what Veterans Day is all about.”

On Wednesday, December 17, the three businesses will once again host a holiday dinner for the military veterans who are hospitalized at the local VA. Last year 50 veterans received dinner, gift bags, and personalized gifts. As example, one veteran got a new pair of shoes, replacing a pair that had been duct-taped together. Another received an outdoor jacket because he did not own one, another a warm-up suit, another a purple sweater — the list goes on. The dinner was a feast — tri-tip, roast turkey. ham, potatoes, vegetables, pies and holiday cookies.

The businesses are accepting cash donations so that they can host another successful event this year.
