Update: Simon emailed that he’s changed the time of the event. It now runs from 5:00 to 6:30 pm.

Teacher Appreciation Week is always celebrated the first full week in May, and to keep that spark going, Feldman’s Books will be hosting an event Thursday, May 16 to introduce a valuable new tool for English teachers. CommonPlace is an app for iPads and smartphones that emphasizes a text-first and discussion-based learning experience.

Geared to middle school ages and up, CommonPlace lets teachers host “classrooms” where students post annotations and relevant quotes directly into the app. Teachers act as facilitators, guiding student-led interactions to foster deeper understandings of literary works.

CommonPlace Classroom co-founder Simon Pintz is a 2019 Menlo-Atherton grad who earned his BE in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He credits the bonds he made in Menlo Park and his teachers/mentors at M-A with providing both inspiration and motivation and looks forward to sharing CommonPlace with the academic community here.

The May 16 event runs 5:00-6:30 pm at Feldman’s Books (1075 Curtis Street, Menlo Park). In addition to a presentation of the new technology, the evening will include wine, music and a brief discussion of the obstacles faced by English teachers and students in developing literacy skills.

Educators and students in attendance will receive a 20% Feldman’s Books discount all evening.
