Community effort fuels bike and scooter donations at Laurel Elementary
On Saturday, January 11, Laurel Elementary saw the power of community in action as families donated their outgrown bikes and scooters through a program organized by Laurel’s Safe Routes to School parent volunteers. The donation effort brought in over 20 bikes and scooters, a great response for this first-time event.
The Safe Routes team will now collaborate with local agencies to tune up the donated equipment, ensuring everything is in great condition before these two- and four-wheeled vehicles are regifted to Laurel students.
Ridership at Laurel has seen remarkable growth in recent years, thanks in part to the ongoing efforts of the Safe Routes program. On any given day, approximately 50 students bike to Lower Laurel (TK-2nd grade), while 130 students pedal their way to Upper Laurel (3rd-5th grade). This increase in ridership even prompted the PTO to purchase additional bike racks to accommodate the growing fleet of student riders.
