Fall getaway: Sanctuary Beach Resort in Marina

Editor’s note: This is one of an occasional posts about relatively nearby getaways.
Yes, it’s that time of the year — where the gloom of summer is replaced by sunny skies overhead.
That’s particularly true on the Monterrey Peninsula. And if a getaway is on your mind, we suggest you consider Marina rather than nearby Monterrey or Carmel.
There you will discover the Sanctuary Beach Resort nestled right on the beach — but tucked off by itself on 19 acres.

On a visit earlier this year, we focused on “just taking it easy,” enjoying what the resort had to offer rather than venturing off, except for some brief beach strolls.
From the balcony of our room nestled near the sand, we were uninvited “guests” at a wedding, spotted whales beyond the break, and gazed at the glow of the nightly bonfire.
We also watched the scampering dogs — the resort is pet friendly — who had their own “library” of dog sticks. Your traveling dog can also partake of a “Pawtio” menu on the patio.
The human meals at the resort’s Salt Wood Kitchen and Oysterette did not disappoint and yielded one somewhat unlikely surprise according to my spouse — the best tasting mashed potatoes ever. The camarones tacos were also a treat. View all the menus online; they change frequently.
If you are seeking a bit of peace and tranquility to “just get away from it all,” the Sanctuary Beach Resort may indeed fit the bill.
