Atherton Police correct misinformation about incident at Menlo-Atherton High School

The Atherton Police Department provided an update regarding the incident at Menlo-Atherton High School on September 10, 2025 in response to recent reports containing what it called inaccurate information.
As stated in the initial release, earlier that day the Department was notified of a tip received through Menlo-Atherton High School’s tip line regarding a potential threat to the school. The tip involved a former Menlo-Atherton student, currently enrolled at another local high school, who had posted concerning content on social media referencing a possible threat.
Clarification of facts provided by Atherton Police Department
- No weapon was recovered.
- The social media post contained an image of ammunition magazines — there were no firearms depicted.
- Out of an abundance of caution, Menlo-Atherton High School and nearby Laurel School were both placed on a “secure campus” order from approximately 12:50 pm to 2:00 pm while officers ensured the safety of students and staff.
- The subject of the investigation is a juvenile who was safely located on September 10, 2025.
- At no time has there been an ongoing threat to the public.
The Atherton Police Department continues to work closely with Menlo-Atherton High School, other law enforcement agencies, and the District Attorney’s Office as this investigation proceeds.
