Hillview students raise over $100K for Relay for Life

If you live in Menlo Park, you may have noticed a few extra bake sales this month — and for good reason. Over the past four weeks, 220 Hillview Middle School students and nine staff members rallied together to raise an amazing $108,342.22 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

The month-long effort culminated in an evening under the stars on Friday, October 24, with the Hillview track glowing from luminarias decorated in honor of loved ones lost to cancer. Students walked for three hours in solidarity with those fighting the disease everywhere — a moving tribute that capped off a remarkable community effort.

Hillview initially set a goal of $50,000 but more than doubled it through creative, student-driven initiatives including bake sales, car washes, neighborhood canvassing, and even a concert in the park. With 28 teams participating, Hillview is now recognized as the largest middle school Relay for Life in the country.

“It’s been inspiring to see so much heart and enterprising spirit come together for such an important cause,” said Hillview Principal Danielle O’Brien. “I’m so impressed by our students—their initiative and compassion have made a real impact, and they’ve shown what’s possible when young people lead with purpose.”
