County Supervisors vote to appoint next San Mateo County sheriff

After a special meeting on October 28 that included nearly 100 comments received from the public about what qualities they want in the County’s next sheriff, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors directed staff in a 3-2 vote to develop clear procedures for an appointment to fill the vacancy in the Office of the Sheriff.
Board Vice President Noelia Corzo along with Supervisors Ray Mueller and Lisa Gauthier voted for an appointment process. In voting “no,” Board President David Canepa and Supervisor Jackie Speier indicated their preference to appoint an interim sheriff followed by an election in June.
Requirements for the sheriff position under the law include residency in San Mateo County and having certain professional qualifications, such as possessing a valid certificate from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. Additional desired qualifications discussed were recent law enforcement experience, including operating correctional facilities, and relevant education.
Supervisors also asked staff to include supplemental questions as part of the application process to provide insight into a candidate’s leadership style and approach. Applicants would be asked to describe their guiding philosophy, identify their three highest priorities if appointed and explain how they would foster public trust and accountability.
The Board also directed staff to schedule a publicly noticed meeting for the Board to interview candidates as well as a public candidate forum.
Under Section 415 of the County Charter, any appointment by the Board must be made by November 13, 2025.
