Schoolhouse Rocks 5K, Fun Run & Festival returns May 17 with expanded sustainability initiatives

The Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation (MPAEF) has announced the return of its annual Schoolhouse Rocks 5K, Fun Run & Festival on Sunday, May 17, at 9:00 am at Hillview Middle School. Bringing together more than 1,500 parents, students, teachers, and community members, the event combines fitness, fun, and philanthropy in support of Menlo Park City School District (MPCSD) schools.
Following the race, participants and families are invited to enjoy a free, high-energy festival featuring bouncy houses, games, music, food trucks, and more —for runners and non-runners alike.
Proceeds benefit all four MPCSD schools — Encinal, Laurel, Oak Knoll, and Hillview — helping fund exceptional educators, enriched academic programs, and innovative learning experiences.
Community Building with Sustainability In Mind
This year, MPAEF is deepening its commitment to sustainability with initiatives designed to reduce the environmental impact of its largest annual event, while still focusing on building community and celebrating athletic achievement.
For the third consecutive year, the event will partner with Sparkl Reusables to eliminate single-use cups at race hydration stations. Instead, runners will use reusable water cups that are collected, sanitized, and re-used after the event. Each year, this partnership keeps more than 1,600 disposable cups out of landfills — eliminating an estimated 35 pounds of waste.
New for 2026, all participant t-shirts will be made from 100% recycled materials, using reclaimed cotton and polyester. Organizers have selected the District Re-Tee, a sustainably-produced garment made without re-dyeing fabric, significantly reducing water usage.
“We are excited for the 2026 edition of this annual event,” said Lennard Hachmann, Chair for the Schoolhouse Rocks 5K, Fun Run & Festival.
“It’s a vibrant day that brings our communitytogether in celebration of joint athletic achievement and supporting our schools. We’re proud to continue expanding our sustainability efforts to reduce our environmental impact. We welcome runners from the entire Menlo Park community to participate and celebrate with us.”
