Team USA Triathlete with disabilities to swim 26-mile marathon for local youth

by Contributed Content on May 4, 2026

On Wednesday, May 6, a USA National Team athlete will attempt a feat of endurance that is as much about a miracle recovery as it is about an elite performance at Burgess Pool in Menlo Park (501 Alma St.).

Aleksei Averchenko — a professional triathlete and 12-time NCAA All-American swimmer —will celebrate his birthday by swimming 46,300 yards (26.3 miles) in the 25-yard pool.

Two years ago, Aleksei’s life changed in an instant. While training, he was involved in a high-speed collision with a car which left Aleksei with permanent disabilities. After a grueling rehabilitation process, Aleksei is now using his “second chance” to mentor the next generation.

As the co-founder of the First Youth Triathlon Team (FYTT) in Menlo Park, Aleksei is swimming 12 hours straight to raise funds for youth scholarships. His goal is to ensure that local children, regardless of financial background, have access to the bikes, gear, and coaching needed to become a champion.
