Beach/ocean safety urged ahead of Memorial Day weekend

by Contributed Content on May 22, 2026

Visitors heading to the San Mateo County coast will see electronic message boards promoting beach and ocean safety as local agencies launch a coordinated public awareness campaign ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

The campaign encourages visitors to:

  • Stay off rocks and never turn your back on the ocean; powerful waves can suddenly sweep people into the water.
  • Stay alert at the beach and keep children within arm’s reach at all times.
  • Know the risks even on calm days. Sudden large waves and strong currents can pull swimmers away from shore.
  • Allow extra time when traveling to and from the coast and prepare for increased traffic.
  • Drive sober, eliminate distractions and drive safely.

The effort is being coordinated by the County of San Mateo, City of Half Moon Bay, CAL Fire and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

While the San Mateo County coastline is known for its scenic beaches and dramatic cliffs, conditions can change rapidly. Cold water temperatures, powerful surf, and unpredictable ocean conditions can create serious hazards for visitors.

If you see someone in need of assistance, call 9-1-1 immediately.
