The Miser by Moliere is being presented by Sacred Heart Prep Theatre with the opening Nov. 5 at 7:30 pm in the Campbell Theater on campus. Additional performances are on Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7, also at 7:30 pm. Tickets, which can be purchased in advance online or at the door, are $5 for students and $10 for adults.
The play is being directed by Francine Torres, who is in her first year as Director of Drama at the school. She says: “I selected The Miser because I love Commedia dell’Arte, and find it a useful tool in learning language and physicality. Working with this new group of students has been quite the learning curve for me!”
For those unfamiliar with the play, here’s a short synopsis.
The Miser centers itself around old, widowed Harpagon (Nick Conroy, ’16) and his two unhappy, frustrated children — the vain Cleante (Austin Peay ’16) and Elise (Grace Zbedlick ’17). Cooped up in their grand but rundown mansion, all three seek love and marriage with surprising results. Both Cleante and his father court the lovely but penniless Mariane (Ellie Duebner ’16) and Harpagaon’s smarmy steward Valere (Ted Caitlin ’16) worms his way into the heart of young Elise. Add Frosine (Caroline Sprague ’16) the mysterious facilitator of love and marriage, and some long-lost relations, a theft, befuddled servants and some random dance numbers — you have a recipe for rollicking comic fun.
