Music@Menlo concludes winter series with concert on May 12 & preconcert conversation on May 8

by Contributed Content on May 5, 2013

To close the 2012–2013 Music@Menlo Winter Series, cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han will be joined in concert  by Emerson String Quartet violinist and Music@Menlo favorite Philip Setzer on Sunday, May 12, at 4:00 pm at the Center for Performing Arts at Menlo-Atherton High School. Tickets are available online.

The program begins with A Major Trio by Joseph Haydn, a composer who is regarded as one of the fathers of the piano trio genre. A magnum opus of the composer, Dvořák’s Dumky Trio evokes the emotionally complicated and brooding qualities of a Bohemian lament. Seamlessly incorporating elements of Classicism and Romanticism, Mendelssohn’s chamber music has become one of his most cherished genres for its refreshing clarity and exuberant pathos, as exhibited in his d minor Piano Trio.

On May 8, Music@Menlo Artistic Administrator Patrick Castillo will offer an in-depth exploration of the music presented in the May 12 program of piano trios. Free and open to the public, this conversational evening takes place at 7:00 pm at Menlo School’s Martin Family Hall. Reservations for the talk are recommended but not required.
