M-A freshmen form jazz combo called The Blues by Five

by Linda Hubbard Gulker on May 11, 2015

That there are six of them — five who went to Hillview and one who attended La Entrada — but their name is The Blues by Five doesn’t seem to concern the Menlo-Atherton High School freshmen who formed their own jazz combo and are actively seeking gigs.

The members of the combo are Chris Iyer on trumpet, Selim Karahan on alto saxophone, Andrew Tan on tenor saxophone, Alex Oesterling on guitar, Lance Onodera on bass, and Callum Burgess on drums.

While they all participate in M-A bands, The Blues by Five is not affiliated with the school. They’ve performed at a startup in San Francisco, the Stanford University Math Department, Off the Grid, and on the day we checked in with them, were appearing at the Menlo Park Senior Center in the Belle Haven neighborhood.

One thing for sure is that they are taking their jobs as band members seriously. They rehearse every Sunday night, choose what music they’ll be performing and who plays solo when. To get the word out they’ve created a Facebook page and have posted a video on YouTube.

To contact the band, email thebluesby5@gmail.com.
