Senator Josh Becker invests $2 million to make dream of Black History Museum a reality on the Peninsula

To commemorate the beginning of Black History Month, State Senator Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park) joined representatives of the Domini Hoskins Black History Museum in Redwood City yesterday (Feb. 2) to present a symbolic check in the amount of $2 million to Executive Director Carolyn Hoskins (pictured with Becker above) and other partners.

Last year, Senator Becker negotiated these funds in order to put the Black History Museum on a secure path forward towards achieving a permanent home so that it can continue to educate our community’s youth about the history of the African American Community.

“The Domini Hoskins Black History Museum serves an invaluable role in educating the youth in our community and telling the rich story and contributions of Black Americans,” said Becker. “These funds will ensure that this revered pillar of our community remains accessible and the lessons that it provides will continue to be taught. I remained committed to doing everything I can to help find a permanent location for this museum so that its impact will remain lasting.”

“The depth of Senator Becker’s compassion and interest to advance and educate the contributions of Black Americans is compelling and restorative,” said Hoskins. “His commitment during our journey to find a permanent home for the Domini Hoskins Black History Museum and Learning Center has inspired us. I deeply thank Senator Becker, his staff, the San Mateo County Event Center, and our community for embracing us and helping us thrive.”

The Domini Hoskins Black History Museum has been searching for a permanent home for nearly 10 years. These funds will ensure that the museum will finally be able to establish an interim location while a permanent location is determined. Additionally, this opening marks the beginning of the museum’s Black History Month Extravaganza.
