Menlo Park partners with UC Berkeley SafeTREC for street safety assessments

by Contributed Content on March 19, 2024

The City of Menlo Park has been selected to receive assistance from traffic safety experts at the University of California, Berkeley’s Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) to conduct Complete Streets Safety Assessments for Santa Cruz Avenue and Sand Hill Road. These streets are part of the City’s High Collision Corridor Network, the 20% of City streets accounting for 93% of fatal and serious injury collisions.

In collaboration with City staff and community members, UC Berkeley SafeTREC will analyze collision data on these streets and conduct a field assessment in April that will produce tailored safety recommendations. These recommendations will help implement the Vision Zero Action Plan recommendations for these streets. Several intersections on these two streets were identified as high priority for short term improvements by the Vision Zero Action Plan.

For more information on the City’s recently adopted Vision Zero Action Plan, please visit the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan page. This assessment expands on the eight ongoing safety projects in progress across the City, including Belle Haven Traffic Calming, Middle Avenue Complete Streets and Caltrain Crossing projects, Middlefield Road Safe Streets and the Willow Road Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety project. Updates on these and other vision zero projects are provided via the City’s website.

How was Sandhill and Santa Cruz selected as from the High Collision link Ravenswood and El Camino look to be in the greatest need; also note the “ High Collision” link is only reported injuries which is just scratching the surface of what is really needed.
