Mitchell Johnson’s paintings from Italy on display at Flea Street
New paintings by Menlo Park-based artist Mitchell Johnson on are display at Flea Street through April 13. They were created during and just after a recent artist residency at the LeWitt Collection in Praiano, Italy.
“At Casa L’Orto — the former home of Sol and Carol LeWitt in Praiano — Johnson spent half of each day painting in the Amalfi landscape and the other half in a makeshift studio surrounded by Sol LeWitt’s mystical wall drawings (five of which are installed amongst the house’s remarkable white archways). He experienced a new context for his work and his response is a return to loose paint handling,” according to the website Hyperallergic.
Added to the pleasure of viewing Mitchell’s paintings is Flea Street’s early spring menu which features two of our favorites — the vegetarian tasting (mine) and grass-fed short ribs (my spouse’s).
Painting shown is “Atrani (Amalfi),” 2024 12×16 inches oil/canvas
