Formal application for development on former Sunset site has been submitted
Emails Menlo Park City Council Member Jen Wolosin, who represents District 3:
“I’m writing to let you know that a formal application has been submitted for the former Sunset Magazine site at 80 Willow Road.
“As reported [Friday] morning on sfyimby.com, the proposal includes four buildings made up of office space, residential units, a hotel and a Montessori school. According to the article, the tallest building has “an expected rooftop height of 431 feet, [and] it could become the tallest building in the Bay Area outside San Francisco, even surpassing the 404-foot tall Ordway Building in Downtown Oakland.”

“As I have stated before, the scale of this proposed project is jaw-dropping, and I am greatly concerned about its impact on our community. The submitted formal application is currently under review by City staff and the City’s Housing Element webpage will soon be updated. The information will be at http://www.menlopark.gov/he; scroll down the page to “Frequently asked questions” and then open the 4th tab titled, “Has the City received any project applications which assert to be filed under the Builder’s Remedy?”.

This is a tragedy! The Sunset/Lane buildings + their beautiful gardens should be preserved forever as HISTORIC!
There is nothing like these buildings and gardens anywhere. Hopefully, this new concept developed only for making lots of $$$ can be stopped. Permanently!
Why hasn’t this historic site been labeled “historic”?
Additionally, anyone who has been on Willow Road during rush hour knows what a nightmare that is! This development would only add to the nightmare.

Especially because of the newer bicycle lanes on Middlefield that brought the number of lanes down from 4 in-total to 2 (one in each direction). What are they thinking?

Simply put, this project cannot be allowed to go forward. All necessary measures should be taken to stop it. I cannot imagine that a single resident supports the project as proposed.

This project is an affront to the character of the neighborhood and will destroy a beautiful historic property. Our family remembers when the Sunset campus opened. The proposal is offensive, all about greed, and should be rejected. Yes, Menlo Park should have put in place affordable housing policies but the punishment (this development) is not proportional.
