Build Up San Mateo County partners with Canopy to launch climate resiliency effort with tree planting event on May 17

On Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 9:00 am to noon, Build Up San Mateo County and Canopy will host a Community Tree Planting Day at two early learning sites in East Palo Alto: Izzi Early Education (EPA and Magnolia locations). The event marks the official launch of Build Up SMC’s Climate Resiliency Initiative — a new effort to strengthen climate resilience at child care facilities across San Mateo County.
Funded by Measure K, volunteers will join families, educators, and local
residents to plant trees and create healthier, cooler outdoor environments for young children to learn and play.
It is the first in a series of upcoming actions including:
● Releasing the nation’s first county-level Climate Action Plan focused on early care and education
● Offering a free online library of climate resources tailored for child care providers
● Expanding cross-sector partnerships with city agencies, environmental groups, and early childhood advocates.
“We’re proud to partner with Build Up in launching this work,” said Dayna Chung, Executive Director of Menlo Park-based Community Equity Collaborative and member of the San Mateo County Commission on the Status of Women. “Child care is the through line that connects healthy communities, women’s equity, and strong local economies. Climate is the next frontier — an urgent layer that deepens the
need for equity-driven solutions in early childhood.”
