Syufy Enterprises to reopen Century Mountain View 16
Syufy Enterprises, the company that built the Century Mountain View 16, announced that it will resume operation of the theater in the near future, ending speculation that the 16-screen cinema would close for good following Cinemark’s exit from the location.
“We know there’s been concern in the community about the future of this theater,” said Nancy Crane, Vice President of Theater Operations at Syufy Enterprises. “The theater will not be closed permanently. We originally built this theater, and we’re returning to keep it open for the community that has supported it for so many years.”
Additional details about the reopening timeline and future plans will be announced in October.

While I’m glad to hear this, I’m confused. I had read there is a huge approved development project for that site. It seemed that the closure was preparing for that to move forward. Is it not?

One important piece of context is that the reopening does not necessarily settle the theater’s long-term future. Syufy Enterprises has submitted a redevelopment proposal for the 1500 N. Shoreline Boulevard property that, in its current form, would demolish the existing theater and parking lot and replace them with a mixed-use development including housing, retail and restaurant space, a fitness center, and public open space.
From what I understand, and I may be wrong about the legal and planning process, this redevelopment has not been approved. The City of Mountain View currently lists it as undergoing environmental and development review.
So the theater is reopening now, but that should not be confused with a decision that the theater will remain there permanently.
