“Meraki Vol. 2,” an exhibit of atmospheric fired ceramics and high-fired tablewares by Misako Kambe is featured at the Portola Art Gallery in October. “Meraki” is a Greek word meaning to do something with passion, pride, and care; or a labor of love.

There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, October 17, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

Born and raised in Tokyo, Misako Kambe’s artistic journey was influenced by her great-grand father, a celebrated calligrapher, philosopher, and educator. In her 20s, Misako was apprenticed at a traditional Kimono studio in Kyoto, Japan. She learned historical paper cutting techniques, as well as the design and craft of Kimono, which helped her develop her unique style and skills today.

Misako moved to the United States in 1997 and has specialized in high-fired ceramics for the past 20 years. For more than 10 of those years, she has focused on atmospheric firing such as wood-fired, soda-fired ceramics. Misako’s works reflect intense labor and undivided attention and care — from form design and intricate carvings, to making her own clay, glazes, and flashing slips.

The Portola Art Gallery is located at the Allied Arts Guild, 75 Arbor Road in Menlo Park.
