Spotted: Candy apple red ’55 Thunderbird

1955 Ford Thunderbird parked on Santa Cruz Ave. in Menlo Park

It was impossible not to notice this near mint condition ’55 Thunderbird parked on Santa Cruz Avenue this morning. We got lucky and met its owner, Shelly Westall. She said the car, which sports old style license plates, has been in her family for most of its life. “My mom was a teacher at Cubberly high school,” she explained. “One of her students owned the car. He died in the Vietnam war and the family gave her his car.” And yes, Shelly knows its special, hence the tender loving care it gets.

Do you drive/own an interesting car? We love to hear from you! Send to tips@inmenlo.com.

I remember ogling over this car when it was parked behind the art department building (between September 1963 and June 1966). Mrs. Johnson drove it to school. I took Art in my sophmore or junior year and became an art “lab assistant” the following year. Often sorting 35 mm slides in the “new” round rack slide projector. Our Class of 1966 is having a 45th reunion August 13th, 2011. I’m working on a tribute for my fellow Vietnam vets who made the ultimate sacrifice. Any idea who the young man is? I’ve found only 3, (2 class ’64, 1 class of ’66. Thanks!
