“In the pink” bubblies for Valentines Day

by Linda Hubbard on February 12, 2010

Sparkling wines appear to leap from the shelves as Valentine’s Day approaches. We turn once again to long time Beltramo’s wine expert Gary Mulleneaux, who last offered “turkey day” selections, to provide recommendations for “hearts and flowers” day that go beyond the usual suspects of well-marketed brands and vintages. To keep things in the pink, Mulleneaux focused on Rosé sparkling wines and champagnes and chose two value picks and two pricier but well worth it selections:

  • Domaine Allimant-Laugner $17.99: “An incredibly reasonable sparkling wine from Alsace that has a nice texture and makes for easy sipping. Plus, it looks pretty in a glass – like a sunset with a touch of voilet.”
  • Scharffenberger Brut Rosé $19.99. “This Mendocino County sparkling wine is bright with a delicate flavor. It has good acidity and is very festive.”
  • Bruno Paillard $59.99. “This nice dry Champagne Rosé is subtle and nuanced. You know immediately that your drinking something very fine.”
  • Edly Ouriet Brut Rosé Grand $99.99. “This Champagne features a little more weight and richness, along with complexity. You can taste a hint of strawberry.”

Beltramo’s is featuring sparkling wines at its Saturday Tasting on Feb. 13 from 2:30 to 5:30 pm.
