On this date — May 5 — the Warlock’s made their first appearance at Magoo’s Pizza Parlor in Menlo Park. As we all know, the band changed its name to the Grateful Dead. It was 1965, 54 years ago.

Get a full list of all the places in Menlo Park and Atherton where the Dead appeared in this post by Corry Arnold from four years ago on the occasion of the band’s last appearance together (minus Jerry, of course).

Our family ate at Magoo’s 2-3 times a month. Walking in one night, I noticed a standing chalkboard in front of the restaurant announcing the “Warlocks”, I remembered because the tv show “Bewitched” was popular then, and I had just learned what a warlock was. About half way through their third song, and halfway through our dinner, my father said “I’ve heard enough of this crap”. We walked out with slices in our hands, never ate there again. I saw the Grateful Dead play in the multi-purpose room at Ladera elementary school a year later. The local newsletter, the Ladera Crier had written “come see the man they call Pigpen”.
