All the Grateful Dead news that’s fit to print

by Linda Hubbard on June 11, 2024

Bistro Vida owner Ali El Safy let us know that the plaque commemorating the Grateful Dead’s first appearance at Magoo’s Pizza Parlor is now in place in adjacent to his new bar, Loretta (where the Harvest furniture store was located).

Here’s a great history of local Dead appearances written by Dead historian Corry Arnold.

And more Dead news: the Grateful Dead house on High St. in Palo Alto (pictured top) is for sale for $2.695 million. Founding member bassist Phil Lesh rented the home, and fellow band member Bob Weir once lived in the garage, which was also used as rehearsal space.

I remember ‘Magoo’s Pizza Parlor’ well. My friend worked there, mostly delivering pizza to residents in Menlo Park and Atherton (think I rode around with him). It was probably after ‘The Dead’ (Warlocks) performed there. Great memories on Santa Cruz Avenue and Stanford Shopping Center with the ‘Big E’, Roos Atkins w/free carnation ice cream and skate boarding or riding flexy’s on the newly paved streets in Sharon Heights, before the homes went in…we had a blast!!
