Construction of the Santa Cruz Avenue / Alameda de las Pulgas Complete Streets Project, will soon be underway

by Contributed Content on September 14, 2024

In late 2020, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved the Santa Cruz Avenue / Alameda de las Pulgas Complete Streets Project, which will enhance existing sidewalk and bicycle lanes. Construction includes:

  • Reducing the section down to one vehicle lane per direction with a two-way center left turn lane on Alameda de las Pulgas from Avy Avenue to Santa Cruz Avenue.
  • Removing one of the two southbound vehicular lanes on Santa Cruz Avenue from Alameda de las Pulgas to Sand Hill Road.

Construction is tentatively set to start the week of Sept. 16. City staff will continue to communicate with County staff to minimize neighborhood disturbances to the best of their abilities.

So good to see that, after 8 years, construction will start. New sidewalks and driveway cuts. Bike lanes. Hopefully slower and sane traffic – a high priority goal. More information is on Safer4Us.com.

Many of our residents will be adversely impacted by the resulting project. When it is completed new medians will hinder or block access to/from many residential properties. You can see details on Safer4Us.com. Good news is that the fix for many of these negative impacts can be resolved with simply modifying how the new pavement traffic and bike lanes are painted and do not require changes to construction; however, if you don’t contact County’s DPW your concerns and request will not be acted upon.

For instance, Prospect residents are put in a far less safe situation when making left turns on to Alameda — Why? Simply because the huge median blocks safe use of the center 2-way turn/merge lane for Prospect residents. Another example, many residents where parking is critical and where utility trucks require parking for service are going to loose that needed parking area. Compounding those locations is that the bike safety buffer, that 2′ space that separates traffic from the bike lane is also eliminated. Comments and discussion is on the Safer4Us website.

Talk with your neighbors if you are negatively impacted and contact DPW on the county’s SMCgov.org website.
