Menlo Drama and the Black Student Union are presenting Menlo Upper School’s winter production, a theatrically-staged concert of The Wiz. This show will take the stage at the Spieker Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, February 5 ; Thursday, February 6; and Saturday, February 8 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students, and are available for purchase at menloschool.org/tickets.

This exciting, seven-time Tony-Award-winning musical is a groundbreaking twist on the classic “The Wizard of Oz,” and has changed the face of Broadway — from its iconic score packed with soul, gospel, rock, and 70s funk to its stirring tale of Dorothy’s journey to find her place in a contemporary world.

Directed by drama teacher Steven Minning, with assistance from assistant director, senior Noelle Lenden, this production embraces the themes of courage, self-discovery, and community. The partnership with the Black Student Union adds a unique dimension, celebrating the rich cultural significance of The Wiz and showcasing the incredible talent and dedication of Menlo’s students.

“Our goal with The Wiz is to create an uplifting and empowering experience for both our performers and audience,” said Minning.  “It’s a story about resilience and joy, told in a way that celebrates the diverse voices of our community.”

“Playing Dorothy has been so rewarding,” said Taj Brandon (pictured front row, third from left). “This amazing young woman is not just trying to get back home — she’s discovering her own strength along the way, and I hope that inspires everyone who comes to see the show.”

“The collaboration between the Black Student Union and Menlo Drama has been energizing,” said Matthew Majalya, who plays the Scarecrow. “We’ve got kids from choir, basketball, mock trial, water polo, and even the middle school! It’s a huge cast, and everybody’s bringing the show to life with authenticity and heart.”

Spieker Performing Arts Center is located on the Menlo School campus at 50 Valparaiso Avenue, Atherton.
