Woodside-Atherton Garden Club annual flower show set for May 17

The Woodside-Atherton Garden Club’s “Simply Spring” flower show will take place at Independence Hall in Woodside on Saturday, May 17. Learn about creating original floral arrangements and nurturing plants.
Local club members will be showcasing their talents and competing in Floral Design, Horticulture and Photography divisions. A panel of club judges will evaluate entries for beauty and excellence. All entries will be on display from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at 2955 Woodside Road.
The entries range from miniature floral designs no larger than five inches in height, width and depth, to freshly cut blooming specimens, and sweeping landscape photos.
Simply Spring Co-chair Wendy Rohn of Menlo Park (pictured left) is excited to see how photographers interpret the class entitled “Buildings with a History.” Co-Chair Karen Hill is wondering if any butterflies or bees will fly into Independence Hall, attracted by the 14 terracotta pots filled with the California native low-growing perennial Erigeron glaucus ‘Wayne Roderick.’
“A goal we all share is to educate people about the crucial connection between thriving plants and healthy environments, and having a lot of fun along the way, such as playfully pitting members against each other, growing the same plant in the seaside daisy challenge class,” says Karen.
Founded in 1929, the Woodside-Atherton Garden Club is a charitable nonprofit organization, one of 200 Garden Club of America clubs spread out across the country.
WAGC is dedicated to encouraging and sharing knowledge about the above three disciplines plus civic responsibility and conservation. At this show, for example, an exhibition about eelgrass will explain how the flowering plant plays a critical role in providing food and shelter for marine wildlife in the San Francisco Bay while filtering pollutants, absorbing carbon dioxide and protecting shorelines from erosion.
