Speed bumps are effective but drivers seek to avoid streets that have them and as a result there is an increase of traffic on nearby streets. Hopkins and Hudson streets in Redwood City are examples.

Speed bumps are effective only when considered in the narrow perspective of reducing speed at the vicinity of the speed bump. There are other problems that it does not address and also raises, such as:
1. Knowing that speed bumps are ahead, drivers tend to speed in the rest of the road.
2. Most drivers break before, and accelerate rapidly after, after the speed bump – increasing noise and emissions/pollution
3. Potential for rear-ending increases at the vicinity of the speed bump because of the rapid braking and acceleration.

So, overall, speed bumps cause more problems than provide a proper solution.
