Any impact of Super Bowl 50 on Menlo Park and Atherton?

by Linda Hubbard on February 5, 2016

The answer to that question is “yes, sort of.”

For philanthropic people with deep pockets, there’s the opportunity to rub shoulders with Joe Montana and Matt Williams at the Big Game Big Give event at the Atherton estate of Jillian Manus tomorrow night for a cool $3,000 a pop. There’s an additional Menlo Park connection; Brendy Monsada of Left Bank will be one of the participating chefs.

Menlo’s two largest hotels, Rosewood Sand Hill and Stanford Park, report strong bookings. The former is offering a Super Bowl package starting at $1,500 that includes deluxe accommodations, arrival cocktails and pre-Super Bowl breakfast for two. “The food and beverage team at Madera has prepared some great offerings including the Smoke & Fire cocktail, a mixture of bourbon and beer topped with a slider and bacon, for visitors to enjoy,” said Managing Director Avi Haksar.

And local florist J Floral Art prepared close to 90 arrangements for guests staying there (pictured above right).

Chaya Donne, Director of Sales and Events at the Stanford Park, said that several corporate groups have multiple-day stays there. “Most of them are clients we work with regularly,” she explained. “Some are hosting their customers, and some are having employee parties.”

Local restaurants are seeing an uptick, too. “Yes, super busy and some amazing 49ers showing up for dinner,” said Jesse Cool of Flea Street Cafe, which is usually fully-booked on weekend nights anyway.

Flea Street is where locals and out-of-town visitors can see some of Menlo Park-based artist Mitchell Johnson’s paintings as well as four large paintings on display at the McKesson building in San Francisco, for those staying in the City. In addition, Bay Area visitors who pick up a Sunday New York Times will get a copy of the artist’s recent catalog.

Then there’s Menlo Park’s largest employer, Facebook, that recently launched Facebook Sports Stadium, which makes it possible to follow the game with your friends without being in the same room. The promise: “See posts from your friends and their comments on the play-by-play, content from experts close to the action, live scores, stats and great game-related videos.”
