Misako Kambe’s ceramics are featured at Portola Art Gallery in October

by Frances Freyberg on October 2, 2024

“Meraki,” an exhibit of wood-fired, soda-fired ceramics, and high-fired tablewares by Misako Kambe is the featured exhibit at Portola Art Gallery in October. “Meraki” is a Greek word meaning to do something with passion, pride, and care — or a labor of love.

A reception for the artist will take place on Saturday, October 5, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

Born and raised in Tokyo, Misako’s artistic journey was influenced by her great-grandfather, a celebrated calligrapher, philosopher, and educator. In her 20s, Misako was apprenticed at a traditional Kimono studio in Kyoto, Japan. She learned historical paper cutting techniques, as well as the design and craft of the Kimono, which helped her develop her unique style and skills today.

Misako moved to the United States in 1997 and has specialized in high-fired ceramics for the past 20 years. Now she is focusing on wood-fired, soda-fired ceramics, and high-fired tablewares.

The Portola Art Gallery is located within the Allied Arts Guild, 75 Arbor Road, Menlo Park. It is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
