SMB Fitness owner YuHui Chen takes on new duties with Rotary Club in Menlo Park

Longtime Menlo Park small business owner and community volunteer YuHui Chen has taken on new duties as District Governor of Rotary District 5150, leading nearly 1,600 volunteers  throughout San Mateo, Marin, and San Francisco counties.

As District Governor, YuHui’s theme for the year is “Season of Love,” a districtwide initiative designed to unite Rotary clubs around service projects that support families, students, vulnerable neighbors, the environment, and youth.

A member of the Rotary Club of Menlo Park since 2011, YuHui is the owner of SBM Fitness and is currently noticing two distinct age groups taking advantage of its services.

“On one hand we have more older adults, who tell me ‘it’s time to take care of myself,'” she says. “On the other hand, we’re seeing seniors in high school who want to learn the proper way to exercise before heading off to college.”

SBM Fitness is a family business with YuHui’s son, Sean Howard, and daughter Mia both involved.

“Fitness is a way to give back to the community,” YuHui says. “There are a lot of fitness apps but the bottom line is the human connection. That’s how we build up trust.
Apps are a tool but using your own body is a skill for a lifetime.”

What does she see as she looks to the future?

“I’m interested in helping the disabled better use their bodies,” she says. “We have the space and professional skill — and there is a need.”

With her added role as Rotary District Governor, she’s hoping she can expand her leadership and networking skills.

“As an immigrant building a new life in the Bay Area, Rotary helped me find friendships, purpose, and opportunities to serve,” YuHui says. “I have seen firsthand how local volunteers can come together to solve problems, support families, and create positive change. My hope is that more people will discover the power of service and get involved in their communities.”
